Dan Choi, an American gay soldier has been recommended for discharge for being in violation of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. The Arabic linguist, Iraqi war veteran, and West Point graduate is featured here on the Rachel Maddow show discussing his story after coming out while in the Army. Choi who was brave enough to out himself and says, “I’m an American soldier that happens to be gay. That’s the way I was born. It’s unfortunate I had to hide that,”
It’s a shame that Dan Choi may have to step down from his well-deserved post in the Army because of an ignorant, non-inclusive, homophobic policy. Choi, 28, is the first officer in the 10,600-member New York National Guard facing discharge because of alleged violations of the don’t ask-don’t tell policy, which President Bill Clinton put into effect in 1993.
